Interview with Sami Yusuf

Interview with Sami Yusuf

9/13/2005 11:00:00 AM GMT
Source: Zaman Online

About Sami Yusuf:

The renowned Muslim British singer Sami Yusuf, born in 1980, started playing many musical instruments at a very young age. He attended music courses in one of the world’s most prestigious music schools, the Royal Academy of Music.

Yusuf, the youngest son of a descent Azeri family that settled in London, got married to a German woman three months ago.

Sami’s training in Western Musical theory and the Middle Eastern modes (or Maqams) helped produce his distinctive voice that has performed to sell out venues around the world.

Sami Yusuf, UK's leading Nasheed singer, is preparing to release his new album, “My Ummah,” on September 30. May Allah give him more success.

Your video clip with the song of “Al-Muallim” went to number one on Turkish music channels. Are you aware of that?

Yes, I heard this from some of my friends in Turkey. I love all of the Muslim world. In particular, I love Turkey more because of its Ottoman heritage. Hence, first and foremost, let me tell you that it is a great pleasure and honor for me to be interviewed by you and your newspaper. I didn’t know that my music would be number one in Turkey and in Egypt. Because initially when we were making this first album, my aim was that the album should be for particular groups, which to be frank and candid are, the Muslims living in the West. It achieved real success among Muslims in the West, elhamdulillah. But we were surprised and shocked when it became apparent that it had become a success, and went to number one in the East as well. All I can say is that this is not Sami Yusuf’s success, but the blessings of Allah and the blessings of the Holy Prophet Mohammed’s (pbuh) name. This is an honor and I am proud of it.

When people first listen to you, they think that you are chanting, however, your music style is more than chanting. How do you interpret your outperforming popular music icons and making the youths who had earlier been fans of pop singers become your fans?

Personally, I don’t regard my music as chanting. Here, I am not going to discuss whether chanting is good or bad. I think we have two types of arts in music: Good music and bad music. We must try to create a new genre to do with good art and good music. I hope that I am part of that genre, which talks about good music. I believe that you don’t have to chant to make good music. Regarding icons, to be famous or not to be famous is not an issue for me. My main objective has always been to do something for Islam and to make the youths be proud of their religion and identity. That is the ultimate goal behind what I am doing. Of course, if you are doing something good, fame comes with it; however, fame is like a test from God. I am not doing all these for fame.

After the September 11 attacks in the U.S., emphasis on the Muslim world being “backward” has been made more than before. You seem to have demolished that in your video clip, what do you say?

First of all, Islam is very beautiful, whether Sami Yusuf releases a video clip or not. The overwhelming majority of Muslim people are good people who obey the laws and want to be good citizens. Apparently, we are faced with some “backwardness” and “bigotry,” But really, this people are in the minority. They are not the voice of Islam. They cannot represent the majority. Islam has beautiful messages advising us to believe in one God and to be good people. This is the essence of Islam that does not give any message advocating violence. Turkish people have a very good understanding of Tasawwuf (Sufism). They really understand these messages well. Unfortunately, this is what some people overlook and sometimes get too involved in the details and forget the main elements why Islam was sent as a message to mankind.

All songs in your first album are related to the Holy Prophet Mohammed (PBUH). What was your aim while doing this?

Of course, people know about the Prophet and love him. But some do not really know how humanitarian he was, how a great human being he was. Our Prophet has been lifted even higher by non-Muslims. He is the most righteous human being who has ever lived. He was a great humanitarian, unfortunately some misunderstand him. I try to explain this with my music.

How did your family contribute to your Islamic understanding?

I was born into a Muslim family and they love Islam. They are not very very conservative. Of course, they pray. I have a sister and a brother. I am the youngest one. I recently got married. My wife is German. One always passes through various stages of his life. Hence, life is a journey. Even though I used to pray before, sometimes, my awakening occurred when I was 16. I can say, maybe, I am a little more conservative than my family (smiling).

What was the real cause of that awakening?

Many things, but firstly, the “hidayet” (true path) to Allah. I am the kind of person who always researches, thinks and tries to learn the truth. This awakening occurred as a result of many things. Elhamdulillah, the turning point came when I was about 16 or 17 and I really wanted to do something for Islam.

Did your family influence you to have an education on music?

My father, who is a very spiritual man, had a great influence on me. He is a music composer. Now, he is mostly teaching. I grew up in a very spiritual atmosphere. My father was definitely my first music teacher. He holds a very talented position in music; he plays more than eight different musical instruments. He has conducted studies on classical music, besides Arab and Middle Eastern music. He loves Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi and likes reading his book, Masnavi, after prayers. I also studied music at various institutions; in fact, he helped me a lot. I am really indebted to my father and mother, both for my spiritual and music education.

You are of Eastern origin, but live in the West. Do you observe your Eastern traditions?

Yes, of course. Tradition is very important as you know, and culture is also part of Islam. A Muslim should uphold his culture, love his culture. Islam did not come to eradicate culture. Only things that go against Islam are wrong. Most cultures are not against Islam. Every society has its own culture. This is wonderful. This is what makes the Muslim Ummah so divergent and rich.

You grew up in Britain. Did you encounter an difficulties during your childhood?

You know that Britain and Europe have negative aspects, but they have good aspects as well. Eastern people mostly do not look at the good points or may not see the good points. For example, there are many elements in Britain and Western Europe that are mostly Islamic. Many chapters were taken from Imam Abu Hanifa’s books in formulating the legal system and the welfare state. You do not find many poor people in Britain, unless they prefer to be homeless. 99 percent of the people here are generally middle class. They have similar lifestyles. There are negative aspects as well. Things you see on TV, the music. But I was not very influenced by those things, I was not very concerned about those things. The major difficulty for children here is having friends. I only really met good friends when I went to high school. I did not know many Muslims friends before. This is definitely a very serious problem.

The children of those who emigrate from East to West are sometimes ashamed of their identities. You drew an image nourished by Eastern culture and benefited from Western civilization. So, how did you solve that dilemma?

Well, I think the idea that the majority of second generation Muslims are ashamed of their identity is a little bit of an over-exaggeration. I think that a lot of these things have to do with the family. From my experience, I can tell you that Allah gave us honor and glory through Islam. We are powerful and successful and blessed by Islam. We do not have the power the West has. We do not have the influence, strength and money. We can never defend ourselves from a tangible point of view. But if we hold on to our religion and destiny and we bring back that glory of our destiny, I very much believe that Allah, the One who raises and casts down, will give us back our glory and destiny again, like during the Andalusian and Ottoman eras. We must try to appreciate the honor, blessings and dignity from Islam. The youths do not know this. Therefore, this is one of my goals to make the youths understand this. That is why my new album is called “My Ummah.” We want to remind the youths that we have a great religion, great Ummah and great identity. We have that beautiful treasure and we must appreciate it. It is Islam that teaches us moral ethics, what else could it be?

What are your future plans? Do you have any message for the Muslim world?

Essentially, what I want to say to my brothers and my sisters is, be proud of Islam. This has two folds: One is spiritual and the other one is practical. In fact, we are part of a destiny we must fulfill. One must first understand Islam’s objectives and then start praying. The fact is that I just want the glory of the Holy Mohammed to come back. I believe it will. The youths are very open-minded now. They are mostly proud of their religion. Although there are some elements of modernity they like, they have realized that staying aloof from religion and shying away from religion is wrong. Religion goes hand in hand with modernity.

What is the peak you want to reach in your music career?

If Allah gives me long life, I will always sing about Allah and Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) all my life. I am not a pop singer. I reminded people of this many times in Egypt. You know that some youngsters requested my phone number there. You know such things always happen. I told them that I am not a pop singer and don’t want to be a pop singer. I just want to do something for my religion. I studied music to give messages through music. We want to reach people we cannot reach through music. I want people who listen to pop singers to listen my music. I believe that we will be successful. About my future plans, first of all, I want to be good person to my family. You find people around you doing wonderful things, yet they neglect their families. I try to respect any person who deserves God’s respect. I want to do my best to fulfill my obligations. This is already a great endeavor on its own. If I die as a Muslim, it will be my greatest honor. In fact, I will try to give messages through music all my life.

World's Youngest Mother

World's Youngest Mother

Peruvian five-year-old Lina Medina, accompanied by her 11-month-old-son Gerardo, and Doctor Lozada who attended her son's birth, are shown in this 1940 file photo taken in Lima's hospital.

When her child was born by Caesarean section in May 1939, Medina made medical history, and is still the youngest known mother in the world.

Lina Medina's parents thought their 5-year-old daughter had a huge abdominal tumor and when shamans in their remote village in Peru's Andes could find no cure, her father carried her to a hospital.

Just over a month later, she gave birth to a boy.

Medina was born on September 27, 1933 in the small village of Paurange. She was only 5 years 8 months old at the birth of her child on Mother's Day, May 14, 1939.

Born at full term at Lima's maternity clinic, her child was taken through a caesarian operation (Dr. Lozada and Busalleu, operators, Dr. Colretta, anesthesiologist). The child (boy), weighing 2,700 grams, was well formed and in good health. Child and mother were able to leave the clinic after only a few days.

Doctor Lozada has conducted very detailed studies since the diagnostic of the pregnancy which aroused much curiosity in the country; he took an x-ray of the child and her baby, established a diagnostic of the fetal situation, observed the state of functionality of the little mother who had begun menstruating at the age of 8 months. At four years old she had already developed breasts as well as pubic hair, her body proportions were a bit amazing and her bone hardening a bit advanced, things that are often observed in cases of such premature pregnancy.

After taunting from schoolmates, Medina's son, Gerardo - who was named after one of the doctors who attended Medina and who became their mentor - discovered when he was 10 that the person he had grown up believing to be his sister was in fact his mother.

Gerardo died in 1979 at age 40 from a disease that attacks the body's bone marrow, but it was said it was not clear there was any link with his illness and the fact his mother had been so young at his birth.

Medina herself married and in 1972 had a second son, 33 years after her first. Her second child now lives in Mexico.

Jal Split - The Real Story

Dear lovely fans,
There were lot of controversies and rumors were spreading about jaL breaking up, so here I am to tell you. Officially what happened with jaL and will tell about some people who tried to spoil it and start it by creating some rumors about me. U have seen many cases of bands breaking up, but I am sure the whole music industry have never seen such a band who had only one song released and they break up. I want to tell u the truth and the reason behind it that why I kick Atif out of band and what was the reasons that forced me to do that.

As ppl from PICS know since when I have been singing Aadat without even the existence of Atif. So no point in proving anything else.. J

That was August 15th 2003 when we ”JAL” had a contract offer with the biggest cellular company of Pakistan and Fakher-Alam was the consultant for that concerning company and they want to meet us immediately in Islamabad for the contract terms and conditions. That day Atif came to me and said that we should have a manager who can talk about this and he said that my brother I is the manager of jaL from now to represent us. I frankly agreed with Atif and thought that he is Atif’s brother and doing that for the sake of the band . so I agreed and I , Atif and his brother Shahbaz Aslam went to meet them and that is the way this manager entered in the band but I had no idea that what’s his intentions were.! After a month, we got some offers for concerts, and I personally refer people to talk with shahbaz Aslam.

With only one song , his brother has started claiming 80000 per concert. ( I think many people who are reading this post are witnesses for that). Some organizer talked to me again and said that are you people r in senses ??/ I mean after one song you people have gone mad and start thinking that you are a super star and bla bla.. so I told Atif once to talk to your brother and tell him that day will come when we will charge more then 80,000 and warned him that don’t claim this money again and start with some decent amount because at the start of jal, we need some exposure instead of money.. he said, “ BACHAY MUGHAY CALL KERTAY HEIN TOE I M SAYING THIS TO REFUSE THEM”… but then again he told the same amount to the people that jal will charge 80,000 and said me that people will agree on it . but in result we have lost 6 concerts in from the month of September to the start of November.

Shahbaz didn’t show me any contract he was doing on behalf of Jal. After some days I saw one of the contracts and guess what? He mentioned that Shahbaz Aslam ( Atif’s brother) is the band member of jaL, ( I will show u the photo copy of that contract on internet ). I talked to Shahbz and asked him that why u mention your name in in the contract as band member and asked him that are you going to play drums. Guitar, bass guitar or will sing with your brother? , he replied I m just sort of a band member for u , I will work with u people , I will design the wardrobe for you people, I will direct your videos and will open a production house ( with the name blue) and then I will open a boutique. And will manage the band, and all the accounts of the band.

he want to be a wanna be and want to do it through the channel of jal, matlab , director+designer+band member+band manager. And Atif has full l votes for his “BELOVED” brother , then my brother had a meeting with Shahbaz Aslam and discuss this thing and told him that this thing should be done by the professionals that is Professional Managers for the betterment of the exposure of jaL and u r watching field of interest through the band instead of making plans to buy the instruments for the band. but he said that this is my brother who is the vocalist in the band and Goher only writes and plays guitar and composes for the band and my brother is much dominant and Atif also said to me that u will not sing for the band and will only play. (Hello.. I made the band Hello)..I think they were really out of their minds. Anyways, I came up with a point and told Atif tha I wil not work with your greedy brother. Either its ur brother Shahbaz Aslam or me. And left his place.

That was the time when the video of Aadat was going to launch and that was the time of happiness for the band because we already got success and appreciation from internet. But on the other hand , his brother was planning that how to get rid of Goher and how to promote his brother. In this process we got an offer for a concert in Al-hamra which was organized on 24th of January. And Atif called me at my place through a person and said that there is no more Shahbaz Aslam between us and come back and lets do the concert. I had a fight with my brother and I said to him that I want Goher who made picked me from college and made Aadat a big hit.

And he made a condition that I will manage the Jal from now on. I said okie fine, i thought that I should believe in him as he is also a good friend of mine and if he is doing it for the sake of the band then I should also come back and rejoin to continue the gigs , just for the sake of the band, so I agreed with him and stared the jamz and he told me that we are doing that concert in 20000 Rs.. I never knew that behind this scene, Atif and his brother signed a deal with SADAF STEREO through Mekaal Hassan , and when Mekaal and Salman Elbert ask that where is Goher, then his brother replied that we were giving him some percentage and he did’nt agree on it so he left the band. ( this statement of Atif was being told to me by Mekaal Hasaan). but I had no idea whats going on.

In those days I got a call from Ahmed Zakaria ( Manager operation ARY , THE MUSIK) for some performances for THE MUSIK channel and he wanted that jal should be there on with with noori, Karvaan and Fuzon.on the 22nd of January. I have talked to Atif about this and he asked me, Goher have u sign any deal with ARY ?,, I replied him with a smile that there is nothing like that , we are just going there for some Tv performances and ARY is sending us the tickets for it they said. I will think over it to go to ARY. And in that time we were doing our jamz for the concert in Al-Hamra on 24th of January and were pretty prepared for the concert , so I again asked to Atif to go with me to Ary and we should not miss that big chance for Tv coverage. He agreed, but then at the last moment. He said that I have an emergency so I m not going, ( just on the instruction of his brother ) because he knows that Atif is vocalist and Goher cannot go with out Atif,. I called Ahmed Zakaria and told him that Atif is not coming, if u want me then I will come on the behalf of the band and sing my two songs which I m singing in the album.

Like Dil haray and another song. Ahmed said , okey come here and perform two songs as he told to everyone that Jal is coming and performing and this would be highly non-professional thing that once u commit with a channel and then refuse it at the last time. So I had to leave alone for Karachi and told them I will come back on 23rd and will do the concert on 24th in Alhamra,, here I will put an example about our Pakistani poilitics, when chief. Of Army staff was out of country and mr. Newaz shareef made a plan to remove him in the absense of pervaiz mussharaf and want the control of his Air Plane.

I think in my case Atif Aslam is mr. Newaz shareef who wants everything and I had to rescue my self.. I went to ARY for recording. His brother who was calling ARY for 2 days and talking AS Atif, said that Goher came here without telling Atif, and u called the wrong person , and forcefully convinced them that Goher is a Secessionist in the band and Atif is the main guy of the band. (Hello .. I am the sessionist?) , when I went to Ary , I have now words what I have been through. They took the Airline tickets back and didn’t let me perform on the show. I was really shocked at that time because I never expected that from Atif and his brother that they will do that to make me out form the band. Ahmed Zakaria and Umer Sheikh are the witnesses of this matter as it all happened in ARY office. I really appreciate ARY especially Umer Shiekh’s wisdom & professionalism, the way he handled the matter. And When I called Atif form my cell and asked him what the hell are u doing by telling them that goher is a secessionist and I didn’t tell u about the ARY function. Toe he replied. I have to go , my cell battery is quite low.

My dear fans, I have to came back from Karachi and I was really pissed off at that time and not in a mood to do the concert on 24rth but I had to do it for the sake of the band. but when I went to Al-hamra, Atif and his brother Shahbaz Aslam has already told the organizers that if Goher will come then kick him off form Al Hamra as he is no more the band member, I tried to tell him that its my band and showed him some legal paper that they cannot perform without me they all were shocked but ultimately t the organizers had to do the concert because they have sold all the tickets and one of the organizer shazil told me that we will continue the concert because we have paid 50000 to jal’manager i.e. Shahbaz Aslam.

I was like but Atif told me that u paid them 20000 for that concert. They said. No we have paid his manager 50000 for the concert. And when I asked him that to whom u paid that money. Show me the man , then that man was again his brother Shahbaz Aslam who was managing Jal on his own after the saying of Atif to me that he is out form the Jal. Shahbaz came and said that kick him out and he is not in the band. Atif picked my two guitar students(HAIDER and OMER) who knows all my song chords which I have composed and they did that concert with him. I think I have never seen the selfishness like this and Atif used them because for the songs he don’t have any other option other then haider and omer because we use to jam at the haider and omer’s place, and atif and shahbaz didn't let them know the reality and made them believe that goher is out of the band so that haider and omer who knew the songs chords could play for him. Haider and Omer were being misguided throughout.

The only reason that I kicked Atif is just because his selfishness which he has showed and the dishonesty and greed of his brother and his plan to kick me out from my own band.. Sorry my friends, After a one song, u should not behave like Michael Jackson. Mm I think Michael Jackson must have some self respect for him and honesty, better than Atif and his brother..

I can say more, but due to legal grounds I cannot.. and as to tell u all, my lawyers who is handling this now is one of the best law firms in our country and they are making sure that ppl associated with Atif and his brother whoever it maybe will pay a big price for this act.. so wait and see J..

And to all the organizers out there, don’t let atif promote jal as he cannot sing cover songs of jal.
From this day onward, all questions and queries regarding Jal will be asked and discussed by our OFFICIAL MANAGER “Khurram Bhai EP (Jilawatan)” so don’t hesitate to contact him…

Love you all for the support ………

Shamshabad fliers in for traffic jams

HYDERABAD: If you are planning to take the first flight out of the city's swank new airport Shamshabad in March 2008, be warned that you might miss it if you didn't start from home early. Blame it on traffic.

For, of all the airport connectivity projects being built, only one is up to speed, the rest languishing in different stages of delay. The Shamshabad international airport is scheduled to go operational in March 2008.

The airport is likely to handle about 200 landings and takeoffs in its first year of operation. No less than four road- and rail-based projects have been planned to ensure connectivity to the airport. Of these, only the Outer Ring Road (ORR) phase I, a 22-km, six-lane freeway from Gachibowli to Shamshabad, seems likely to keep its date with the first flight.

Having begun work in April, its two contractors, Russian firm Transtroy and Taiwanese company Continental Engineering, each working on 11-km stretches of ORR-I, are likely to meet the deadline.

The Elevated Expressway—Mehdipatnam to the Aramghar junction on NH7—is certain to be delayed. The two Indian companies building it, Simplex and Somdatt, are still doing pre-execution work.

The freeway is not likely to be completed until the end of 2008 or even early 2009. As for the two rail-based connectivity projects—extension of the Multi-Modal Transit System (MMTS) and the Metro Rail Transit System (MRTS)—they have not even reached the blueprint stage.

Extending the existing MMTS terminal point from Falaknuma to Shamshabad would cost only Rs 80 crore, but the parents of the ill-starred transport system, the South Central Railway and the state government, seem not too keen on it.

South Central Railway general manager D N Mathur says the extension of the suburban rail line up to Shamshabad would be part of MMTS phase 2, on the feasibility of which the railway ministry is still mulling. Considering the low passenger patronage of MMTS Phase I—the slow blue suburban trains you see in city now—the fate of phase 2 seems doubtful.

In the MRTS scheme of things too, Shamshabad is a distant destination. The project is deadlined 2010. Moreover, under phase 1 of the project, an MRTS line is planned only up to Falaknuma. Its extension to the airport town will not happen until MRTS phase 2.

However, MRTS project director N V S Reddy held out a ray of hope, saying a recent study by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation had explored the possibility of providing connectivity to Shamshabad through MRTS.

JAL @ CBIT

JAL will be in town, but i hope there's no extra JAL from the rain gods, in case you cloudy folks have planned something for Saturday can we reschedule it please? Although they never did for any Felicity's so far.

They will be performing on 9th of Sep, this Saturday with DJ Suketu and Karunya (Indian Idol runner-up) at GBIT grounds on the eve of Carpediem seems to be some 1 day fest organized by their (CBIT) alumni junta.

More info available at the poster - http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y42/suvesh/MainPoster.jpg

Tickets available at - Prasadz & Cafe Coffee Day outlets. Interested ppl can also contact 9885558555. Map and directions available on the web site. Stag entry is allowed and the Tickets are priced wisely at

It seemed that after some negotiations a group can avail a discount of upto 20% off for every 25 tickets purchased. Is IIIT junta reading this?

Those who cant attend this one, you don't have to be disheartened as they will be back in town on 1st of Oct performing at Nalsar Law college as their official website mentions it. More history and the relation with Atif can be found out at the wiki entry.

They seem to be quite cool with their copyrights as they have put the mp3 version of all their songs on their website for download or it can be just an outcome of a the cut throat competition with Atif which also does the same.

Do browse the JAL's audio gallery and must listen some of the tracks once. My personal favorites include - Aadat, Bikhra hoon main, Ik Din Aayega, Dil Haarey, Rangon Mein. Also check out the teaser of their upcoming track Payal

About Atif Asalm

About Atif Asalm

Atif Aslam is a Pakistani musician. He was born in Wazirabad, Gujranwala and educated in Lahore and Rawalpindi. Aslam started his High School in PAF College Lahore, where he played cricket and became interested in music. He paired with a guitarist named Gohar Mumtaz, and the two performed for their college and at restaurants, later calling themselves JAL which means water. Working together, the pair recorded the song AAADAT. It became popular on different musical websites in Pakistan. The song was also played on such Pakistani radio stations as FM100 and FM105. The music video for AADAT was shot one day in a warehouse in Karachi. Due to personal problems in the band, Atif Aslam left Jal and became solo. Atif Aslam, after splitting from the band Jal, released a new solo album, Jal Pari which became a mega hit. The Songs Woh Lamhey, Dil Haarey and few others were a smash hit that were played on Pakistani Radios all around. Atif Aslams soulful voice crossed the Pakistani border and reached India when Bollywood director Mahesh Bhatt called Atif Aslam to seek his consent to put Woh Lamhey as a song in the soundrack of his new motion picture, Zeher. After that, Atif Aslams music spread across to people and radio stations that play it all over the subcontinent now. There was initially some controversy as some of the songs in Atif Aslams solo album were from the time when Atif did not leave the Jal band. This has brought up two saparate groups of people: One is who believes Atif Aslam stole the songs while the other group thinks that Atif did not steal any song and he had equal rights to sing the songs which were made with his involvement. One fact which is not much published is that Atif and Gohar (when they were together) openly said in an interview on a music web site that Aadat was made by the involvement of both Atif and Gohar, in terms of composition as well as lyrics. The group also said in that interview that they brought up the name Jal together. Now that the band has split up, both the parties claim that the compositions along with the lyrics were owned by each of them, Gohar being more vocal in this claim. But despite that, it was Atif Aslams magical voice that became the reason for fame of Jal. Atif has continued to grow as he has recently been successful in getting further deals from Bollywood. He recently sung a song for the movie Kalyug. The title of the song is Juda Hokey Bhi which is a slight variation of the ever famous Aadat song. Along with that, he has also got a deal from Hollywood movie titled Man Push Cart in which 3 of his songs are present. Atif has won several awards for his performace both in India and Pakistan. Atif Aslam has already reached at a great place at this young age and he surely looks like he is going to provide more quality stuff to his listeners. Atif is currently working on a new album entitled Hangami Halaat with his new band mates, Mahmood Rehman on guitars and Sameer Shami on bass. the long awaited second album is due for release in the summer of 2006, and is hoped to finally put an end to the jal-atif controversey. The single Jal Pari was released on 20 July, 2004 all over the nation by Sound Master and IC records.
